Volunteers spruce up home

A crew of talented people used a good portion of their time recently to help complete renovations, and perform landscaping duties at Transition House, which provides a safe environment for women and children recovering from abusive and violent relationships.

The home was established in June 2005 and is supported in part by the United Way of Greater Simcoe County and FaithWorks-Anglican Diocese of Toronto.

Transition House offers long-term, affordable housing to families up to one year.

Run by Samaritan House Community Ministries of Barrie, the volunteer crew was headed by Claire Nagy of Newcastle Interiors and Susan Racco Brewin of Family Care Connections. Work included hand-painted murals on interior walls, new fixtures and window coverings.

Another group of youthful volunteers from the First Christian Reformed Church, named the “SERVE TEAM” was coordinated by John TeBokkel and Chuck Zylstra.

Extreme Home Makeover for Charity – A Success!

Susan Racco-Brewin owner of Family Care Connection Nanny Inc. and Claire Nagy owner of Newcastle Interiors of Barrie, would like to extend our thanks to the following sponsors who contributed to our “Extreme Makeover” of the Samaritan Transition House for women and children in Barrie.

July 2006, both Newcastle Interiors and Family Care Connection Inc. forged together to initiate a much needed renovation and redesign project for the Samaritan House.  This included, fresh paint, new flooring, window treatments, painted mural, updated décor and redesign.

“Originally,” says Racco-Brewin  “We had hoped to makeover one of the rooms in the home, to make it brighter and more comfortable for the families that use it.  We were blown away by the support and generosity in our community, and were able to renovate and makeover the entire top floor of the home.”

“ We are truly pleased with the outcome of this project.” says Nagy.  “The work was completed in just two weeks, and it looks amazing.”

A huge thanks to John TeBokkel, Chuck Zylstra, and the SERVE Team for your hard work and efforts in painting, laying down floor tiles, gardening, and being dedicated to complete the job.  As well as Albert Brouwer of the Dutch Reform Church.  We truly appreciate your efforts.

Thank you to the following individuals who donated furniture, home décor, clothing and books to the Samaritan House:  Sue Nickason,  Jill Morrell, Chelsea Croteau,  Diana Jacobs, Loreli Cockram.

And finally, this project would not have occurred without the support of Astrid Willcox, and Susan Cronje from the Samaritan House, for allowing us to come in and make changes to the home.  You entrusted us, and we appreciate the opportunity to assist the Samaritan House families.

Thank you everyone for making this project a success!
